Portrait of Xinmeng Li

Xinmeng Li is a composer, sound artist, and creative technologist exploring the intersection of sound, music, and interactive technology. Her practice brings together electronic and electroacoustic music, sound design, and improvisation, extending from recorded compositions to instruments and software that invite others to shape sound.

She is drawn to how changes in a waveform, a fragment of recorded sound, or a physical gesture can alter a musical idea. Her work moves between synthesizing electronic timbres and transforming acoustic samples, with close attention to how sounds develop over time and relate to one another.

Her interest in interactive instruments and sound software grows from improvisation and hands-on experimentation. She has developed a handheld interface that maps movement to sound, and a birdsong instrument using IRCAM’s RAVE model for neural audio synthesis. For the birdsong instrument, she defined the creative aims and interaction design, working with an AI coding agent on the software implementation.

She also plays piano with school ensembles, bringing collaborative performance into her musical practice. Whether composing a track or designing an instrument, she is interested in the choices that emerge through experimentation and in giving performers room to explore those choices for themselves.
